Business Etiquette: How to Strengthen Workplace Relationships

I shared the following tips on How to Strengthen Workplace Relationships with the Good Day Austin team at Fox 7:

  • Don’t keep people waiting. Make sure you arrive on time; it shows respect for yourself and for others. Bad traffic is not a reasonable excuse considering your colleagues likely encountered similar challenges.
  • Return texts, calls and emails promptly. Although it is courteous to respond within 24 hours, the reality is others often wish for a reply sooner. If you have a moment to acknowledge their text or email, but don’t yet have time for the full response, let them know you’ll get back with your thoughts ASAP.
  • Be mindful of coworkers in a pinch for extra help. When you cross-connect with others in the office, you not only learn more about what they’re working on, but you may also gain new skills.
  • Treat an intern or new hire to a professional lunch to share your knowledge. We’ve all been the new person in an office, and welcoming them with open arms speaks highly about the team culture and your personal character.
  • Compliment a coworker publicly on a job well done. Your positive nature and encouraging team spirit will likely be contagious!
  • Curb the gossip. Remember, you instantly lose your power when you have something negative to say about another person.
  • Allow co-workers to see another (interesting) side of you. Perhaps something they don’t know about you; for example, that you play piano, are bilingual, or love to surf. You’ll come across as well-rounded and interesting.
