Business Etiquette: Nine Tips to Surviving a New Boss

09 Sep 2010 By: Diane Gottsman

Change in management can be a big adjustment.  You can adjust your attitude and do your part to help the change go smoothly.  Here are nine tips for surviving a new boss:

1.  Don’t wait for an introduction. When meeting your boss for the first time, extend your hand and introduce yourself. This gesture shows self-confidence and respect.

2.  Stay positive under pressure. Although this may be a time of office flux it’s important to be a team player rather than a co-worker that is dividing the team.

3.  Observe your new boss’s business wardrobe. If you see that you are consistently underdressed at the office, update your wardrobe to mirror your boss’s level of professionalism. The way a superior dresses can say a great deal about his expectations of his employees.

4.   Don’t get too comfortable. The first few months are critical and you must be on top of your game. Show leadership qualities by being proactive rather than sitting on the bench waiting for work to come to your desk.

5.  A clock-watcher will not get the promotion. Don’t miss an opportunity to greet your boss early in the morning or say goodbye after everyone else has run out the door at 5:00 pm. He or she will notice your extra effort.

6.  Keep your skills current. Seek out professional development training that would enhance your job performance and increase your value as an employee.

7. Communicate with your boss face to face. When appropriate, rely less on technology and more on personal relationships.

8. Turn your cell phone off during the workday. Except for emergencies, don’t take personal calls during work hours. Stay focused on work and leave your personal life at home.

9.  Make your boss shine. Whenever you do a good job, so does your boss. Let others know the positive impact your new boss has made on the company. It will get back to him or her that you are talking…and thankfully, not at the water cooler!
