Gym Etiquette: Holiday Fitness Tips by James Olsen

11 Nov 2010 By: Diane Gottsman

With the holidays rapidly approaching I decided to consult my own fitness trainer, James Olsen, owner of FIT Studio in San Antonio, TX, for some holiday fitness tips on how to keep unwanted “baggage” off our holiday derrieres. This is what James said:

1. If you put it off, you will put it on! Get in your workout early in the morning, before your family, extended family and holiday guests wake up looking for their first cup of coffee.

2. Famine (a bit), so you can feast. The week before Thanksgiving several of my clients go on an extra low carb, low fat, and moderate protein diet. Just say “No” to bread, sweets, chips, pasta, rice, and holiday candy.

3. Feed the muscle and starve the fat. Replace a daily meal with a low carb protein shake. My favorite is chocolate egg white by Jay Robb.

4. Lift weights for weight loss. Too cold? Not enough time? Don’t like cardio? Neck hurts? It’s raining? (Hmmm…sounds like Diane!) No worries and NO EXCUSES! Circuit resistance training is the best way to burn body fat, add muscle, and increase the metabolism.

5. Consider interval training. If you would like to run, but don’t have a lot of time, try a 30 second fast pace and a 20 second moderate pace. You can easily turn a 35-minute run into a 20-minute run.

6. Go green to stay lean. Incorporate more veggies into your diet and stay away from starches.

7. Fast to go faster. My personal number 1 rule for fat loss is to work out on an empty stomach for quicker body fat reduction. It works.

Well, there you have it. James Olsen’s holiday tips to keep you in holiday shape.  He said his personal favorite holiday foods are: turkey, sweet potatoes, and chocolate cake.  His entire family enjoys his specially prepared spinach salad. His wife Nelly keeps fit during the holidays by chasing their daughter, Isabella, around and trying to cook for 30 people all at the same time! He calls it “Cardio Cooking”.

My personal goal this holiday season is to exercise moderation when enjoying Tyler Hightower’s (@TylerJHightower) Coconut cake! I just can’t get that cake off of my mind, regardless of what time of year it is! What is your technique for keeping fit during the holidays? We’d love to hear from you!

Have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving,

    Diane,
These are really great tips! I am terribly guilty of ‘putting it off and putting it on’ every day – not just holidays! Thanks for the motivation!
