A Special Father’s Day Message to my Dad

19 Jun 2011 By: Diane Gottsman

I’ve recently been blessed with the opportunity to help my mom care for my aging father, giving this Father’s Day even more meaning.  I’ve always known that my Father loved me, as if I were his own child.  You see, my biological father passed away when I was a young child.  The man that I call “Dad” has been a Father to me since the age of 9.  I couldn’t have asked for anyone better.

Growing up, I didn’t always understand why my Father was so strict or why Dad said “no” so often. It’s clear today that he was creating a loving yet disciplined environment to protect me.  The value system he instilled in me growing up still guides me today.

My Dad taught me many valuable lessons, among them the importance of hard work, honesty, and integrity.  He also taught me that your word is your bond and that you are defined by the company that you keep.  These core values are still a large part of both my personal happiness and my business success.

My strong, hardworking, disciplined, and loving Father is suffering with Alzheimer’s disease.  Many of you can personally relate to the heartache this disease can bring to an entire family.  As I watch my Dad struggle to express himself the way he was once able, I cherish every moment that we still have together.

Happy Fathers Day, Dad!

Recently, I wanted to make sure my Dad knew how grateful I was for his love and sacrifice over the years.  Kneeling beside him, I looked him in the eyes and verbally thanked him for everything he has done for me throughout the years. I watched as he struggled to form several words together as he said “I did the best that I could”. At that moment I was overjoyed and overwhelmed at the same time. That was the last time he spoke an entire sentence but I know on some level he still understands. Here’s to all the Father’s in the world, both alive and alive in our hearts.

I love you Dad, Happy Father’s Day!

Love Always,
