Clothing Etiquette: Tips for Wearing a Body Shaper

06 Jul 2011 By: Diane Gottsman

Everyone that is in the public eye (that means you) and wears form-fitting clothing or tailor made suits should be wearing a body shaper! Not only does a good pair of Spanx-like undergarments shape your bottom end, it allows your clothes to fit exactly as the designer intended – free of lines, bumps and kinks.

Tips for Buying a Body Shaper

  1. Keep it under cover. A great pair of legs loses its luster when you can see the shaper peeking out from your short skirt. If your skirt or dress has a back slit, do a test run in front of your mirror to make sure your firming shorts are not showing.
  2. Too tight is too bad. If your shaper is binding, it will be uncomfortable and unsightly. The extra spillage has to come out somewhere else and it usually results in a muffin top or bulge on the leg where the shaper ends. Too large is also an issue because it defeats the purpose of the undergarment. Your shaper should fit “Not too loose, not too tight, but just right.” If you are between sizes, go up instead of down, just as long as it isn’t swimming around your waist or thighs and not making contact with the skin.
  3. Select a smooth fabric. You have many shaper choices and some are more comfortable to wear than others. Make sure the material is smooth and flows over your clothing rather than sticking to the material of your trousers, dress or skirt.
  4. Don’t wear shape-wear as outer clothing. Although some shape-wear is meant to be worn either way, there are other types that are strictly meant to be worn underneath your clothes. A legging is not the same thing as a calf-length shaper.
  5. Put it on and forget about it. A great fitting shaper will allow you to feel comfortable and put together. If you find yourself grabbing, digging or pulling at your undergarment, you are wearing an ill-fitted piece of shaping equipment.
