Sole Sisters: Great Friends and Good Shoes Go Hand in Hand

Most men and women probably have a closet full of shoes, carefully lined along their shelves in the closet, or artfully tossed around the room, each with their own purpose, personality and flair. When you think about it, our friendships are the same way. They are all unique, come in different sizes, colors and (heel) heights, each playing a key role and serving a distinct purpose in our lives.

There’s that one special pair of ultra-comfy shoes that you have had for many years…the ones you reach for when you know you have a hectic day ahead of you. They are molded to your foot and perhaps worn out in places, but never constrict or cause you pain. They are reliable, need little up keep and always weather the storms of life right along with you…much like the friend that is always there for you, in the good times and the bad. A nonjudgmental cohort that knows your secrets, has felt your pain and shared in your happiness. You would think nothing of asking a hard favor, and wouldn’t blink an eye if your friend asked the same of you.

Then, there is the latest season’s fashion shoe. The one that makes everything look better when you slip them on. Your legs appear longer, leaner and even stronger, until…pinch, blister, ouch! You can only wear them for a little while before your toes start to throb and you must resort to taking them off and going barefoot under your desk. Much like the friend you love to see, but can only take in short, small doses. They look fabulous but pack a forceful punch!

And what about that exciting, colorful, sandal? The shoe that is loaded with personality, always a conversation starter and ready to take you someplace fun. Never a dull moment when you are wearing them or spending time together.

We’ve all experienced the “too expensive” pair that we justified buying by calling them a “long term investment.” The reality is, money doesn’t always buy quality, and “too much work” is often too much work.  The best friendships are organically a great fit.

Classic pumps are always in style. They are stable and strong and assist in carrying you to the next level. Just like the friend that understands your ambitions, goals and your desire to grow – they are beautiful inside and out. They are an asset to your professional wardrobe and you are proud to have them in your closet (and your life).

A good pair of workout shoes is like the friend that pushes you to do more than you thought was possible.  They’re the friend that inspires you to be your best, implement moderation when necessary and make healthy choices.  Wouldn’t it be great if your shoe could make you their famous kale smoothie?

A stylish pair of flats is classic, upbeat and ready for an adventure. Much like the friend who is always up for an afternoon of shopping, a cup of iced coffee, a spontaneous bike ride or a relaxing mani-pedi. The friend who is interested in what’s going on in your life, what’s new with your family, and what book is on your nightstand. They are great for museum trips, and a quick drop-in to meet a local author at a book signing.

Shoes, like friends, need proper maintenance, attention to detail, and to be treated with the respect they deserve. Take care of them and you will have them for many years to come.  It’s a blessing to open your closet and have a selection of various shoes, just as a person is lucky when they can open their door to welcome a guest list of valuable friendships.
