Business Etiquette: Choosing the Right Watch for the Office

07 Nov 2013 By: Diane Gottsman

Watches are an essential part of a professional wardrobe, especially when you are working front and center with important clients. Despite what you might think, you should not count on your cell phone to keep you updated on the time. Glancing down is distracting and appears as if you are bored with the conversation. A watch is considered an important “detail” that shows you are on top of your game. Choosing the right watch can be difficult, so here are a few examples of the right watch for the right occasion:

An Everyday Watch Staple: Suit Appropriate & Office Casual

Having a work appropriate watch is as important as owning a properly tailored suit. A link or leather strap is the perfect way to make a strong professional impact.

Holiday Black Tie Watch Ideas

You can quickly downgrade your festive attire if your choice of watch doesn’t match your outfit.  Make sure to find one that is equivalent to the elegance of your tuxedo or cocktail dress.

Office Don’ts

You may have a colorful personality, but it’s best to show it with your smile and witty sense of humor, rather than your watch. The following are all too Loud or Silly choices.

In Need of an Update

If you are still wearing a watch similar from 30 years ago, it’s “time” for a new model, at least at the office. The watch may be your grandfather’s first watch, and wearing it brings back fond memories and a great deal of nostalgia, BUT it’s not the right look for impressing a client. Clean it up, shine it bright and take pride in what you wear.

Now may be the perfect time to put a new watch on your holiday wish list. It will be a great addition to your professional wardrobe and a good investment for your career.
