As cooler weather ushers in your winter wardrobe, you may find your closet needing a little refresh. Before you break out your credit card, review our short list of “must-haves” to get you through the holidays. These aren’t your standard silk shirt, little black dress, or classic pumps, which, for all intents and purposes, should be staples in every woman’s closet. They are what we call our “Flawless Fall Essentials.” Items that can be dressed up or down, and won’t leave you out in the cold. Far from it, they’ll become familiar pieces you’ll be reaching for all season long.

The Sweater Dress
A comfortable sweater dress in a subtle shade will keep you warm through winter. Reach for color hues in purples, blues, or creams for both function and versatility. Pair with a glittering necklace, black tights, and your favorite heels for an evening out. Or dress it down with a beautiful scarf, toasty leggings, and boots for a casual Saturday lunch date.

A Statement Scarf
When you’ve got a scarf you love, you’ll find yourself throwing it on every single time you head out the door. A wrap made of fine wool, cashmere, or silk helps the body maintain heat while adding personality to any outfit.

A Day-to-Night Bag
With work, kids, errands, shopping, and parties to attend to this holiday season, who can waste time switching from purse to purse? A day-to-night bag is critical to a chic and effortless outfit. A hue like camel, grey, burgundy or lavender keeps the look appropriate for daytime. While a touch of metal hardware adds just the right amount of glamour for night without looking out of place at the office.

The Modern Trouser
Your choices are limitless. Choose a slightly wider leg or a skinny leg in a stretchy material (but not leggings to the office). Both offer a flawless finish without having to sacrifice style or comfort. Pair with pumps or boots in a similar color for an elongated leg that’s appropriate for work. Or dress to impress with gorgeous drop earrings, a ladylike blouse and strappy heels for evening.

A Pair of Stylish Boots
Boots are a great addition to any wardrobe and your choices are endless. Booties, flat heels, high heels, wedges, tie up, zipper back, and over the knee are only a few options. Experiment to see what style fits your taste and personality. Don’t be afraid to invest in several pair.

Whether you choose a boot in black, brown, or an earth tone, keep comfort and fit in mind. You’ll thank yourself as you dodge piles of leaves or snow running for the subway or a taxi, all the while looking professional and put together.

An All Weather Trench Coat
I’ve talked about this staple item before, but it’s hard to beat a great looking, long lasting trench that does double duty in rain, sleet and snow. It fits in perfectly at the office, on a cold night at the theatre, or on a date with a friend. Nothing spells “classic” better than a confident woman who shows up in a belted trench, a great pair of rain boots, and a big smile on her face. Read more about my love for trench coats here.
