Coming together for Thanksgiving offers so much more than the opportunity to share in a delicious meal, though that is certainly something to be enjoyed! For the host, preparing for a beautiful gathering means time spent in advance on the details so that she can be fully present when the holiday arrives. As a guest, graciously offering to help your host in the preparations and engaging in thoughtful conversations with those around you will make the Thanksgiving more meaningful and take some pressure off of the busy host. In today’s post, I’m sharing a few helpful holiday etiquette tips along with my guide on Setting the Thanksgiving Table.
One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories was sampling a little piece of turkey when it came out of the oven. My grandmother would “slip” me a piece when no one else was looking – of course, I thought it was a huge honor and the reality was, no one really cared but me. The little gesture made me feel special.
Do’s and Don’ts of the Holiday Table:
- Do sit where your place card directs you.
- Don’t bring your cell phone to the table.
- Do remain standing until the host takes a seat.
- Do eat, pacing yourself according to other guests.
- Don’t reach across the table.
- Don’t spoon away from your soup bowl.
- Do speak to guests on your left and right side.
- Don’t chew with your mouth open.
- Don’t season your food prior to tasting.
- Do wait for the host to propose the first toast.

Happy Thanksgiving,
