Dear Diane,
I was wondering if you could help my colleague and I settle a friendly debate regarding whether or not we should tip the Uber driver. I believe tipping is the right thing to do, but he pointed out that their website clearly states “no need to tip.” Any advice?
Taylor N.
Dear Taylor,
What a timely question, and a topic that has been in the spotlight lately. I recently came across a “Tip Your Uber Driver” t-shirt online which reminded me of the confusion people often experience.
As far as the company’s official stance, Uber is clearly in the “no tip is necessary” camp, whereas one of their competitors, Lyft, provides the option to add gratuity within their app. You can even send one later if you forget!
Perhaps this dilemma would be less complicated if the discussion was limited to UberTAXI, where a tip is automatically included (as mentioned on their website here). However, when traveling by UberX or UberBlack, a tip is NOT factored into the cost of the fare, and is still discouraged by Uber.
What’s a mannerly passenger to do? If you feel inclined, carry enough cash to offer your Uber driver a tip. It is certainly not required, but for superior service it would be a nice gesture. Leave it up to your driver to accept or politely decline.
If Uber were to add an across the board tipping option, there would be at least 27,000 happy consumers according to this online petition. Of equal importance is remembering to leave your driver a positive review after you have reached your destination.
Happy travels,
Diane
