Chivalry Is Not Dead

13 Feb 2018 By: Diane Gottsman

While relationships may not look the same as they did in the 50s, common courtesy is a value that never goes out of style.

Dating Etiquette

Whether it’s a first date, Valentine’s Day dinner or a night out with your spouse, there are timeless romantic gestures that show far more thoughtfulness than your standard box of chocolates.

Here are 8 quick tips to follow to show your date that chivalry is still very much alive and well:

Send Flowers Ahead of Time

While flowers are always appreciated, they often feel more significant when they are unexpected. Send your honey a bouquet ahead of your evening plans, not as the main gift but as a thoughtful gesture. Attach a note that says, “looking forward to tonight,” or “thinking of you.” It’s a surefire way to build the excitement and make your date feel special.

Pay Attention to Details

A person’s appearance is often the basis for a first impression which is why it’s important to choose the right clothes. Select an outfit that will give you the boost of confidence you need without being too bold or flashy. Shine your shoes, polish your jewelry and iron out those pesky wrinkles. Don’t forget, the best way to complete your look is with a smile.

Show Respect

When it comes to dating, people often think the man should order for his date. And while it might chivalrous, it could also come across as condescending if the delivery fails. It’s safest to allow your date to speak for themselves and show your manners by stand up when the woman leaves the table, making pleasant conversation and paying the bill promptly instead of allowing it to linger for an awkward length of time.

Leave the Past In the Past

Nothing spoils an evening faster than a date who continuously brings up their ex during dinner. While discussions about your dating history are sure to happen somewhere down the line, Valentine’s dinner is not the right time.  It’s often mistaken as an indication that you aren’t entirely over your last fling and therefore emotionally unavailable.

Be Present

Whether you’re enjoying an intimate dinner for two or catching a new movie, turning off your phone is a small way to show you are totally in the moment. Expressing genuine curiosity in what your date has to say is an important step in creating a strong connection.

Learn How to Dance

There are many benefits to learning how to dance, aside from just being physically close to your sweetheart. Dancing is a great boost for your self-esteem and helps creates synergy, essential to any relationship. Surprise your partner with your best moves and they will not only be impressed, but it might just open the door to a second date.

Respect Tradition

Although an “I’m here” text might seem efficient, picking up your date at the door is still a romantic gesture. Open the car door for your date and when you arrive at your destination, walk along the curb—making her feel cared for and safe. Although we live in an ever-changing society, it’s important to remember some traditions are timeless.

Call the Next Day

It’s the following day and (hopefully!) you find yourself reliving the fun. Pick up the phone and let them know you look forward to the opportunity to see them again. Dating should be honest, fun and executed with intention. Be bold and take the initiative.
