Today is National Hot Dog Day!
Whether sitting on the bleachers at a baseball game, a barbecue or pool party, what better excuse to enjoy this popular staple?
Here are a few hot dog fun facts just in time for today’s celebration.
Our Favorite Dog
Hot dogs are undoubtedly a food-friendly choice during the hot summer season. So much so that, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), Americans typically eat seven billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with 150 million consumed on Independence Day alone.
Creative Toppings
While mustard, chili, relish and sauerkraut round out the top of the list of top ten hot dog toppings, there are a few more choices that are definitely worth noting. More and more hot dog lovers are turning to condiments like bacon, salsa and avocado to top their dogs. Some of the most adventurous options even include coleslaw, mac and cheese, fried eggs, siracha and even peanut butter!
How to Dress the Dog
When it comes to topping your hot dog, there is a specific order to slather your bun. According to the NHDSC, condiments like sauces should be applied first, chunky condiments such as onions and relish are applied next, followed by cheese and topped off with spices like salt and pepper.
Did you know you should never apply the toppings between the frank and the bun? Toppings should always go on top of the dog to help prevent the bun from getting soggy or breaking apart.
Which Is Your Favorite?
According to the NHDSC, 61 percent of people prefer beef franks, while 12 percent prefer pork and only 7 percent prefer turkey. You can even find vegan options for those for who prefer to skip the meat.
