Summer is here; it’s a great time to hit the road! Gas prices are down, and there are so many places to visit without the hassle of worrying about a carry-on bag or delayed flights. The good news is, you can pack what you want (within reason) and enjoy the ride. The kids can sleep or play games, and you can listen to your favorite podcast, whether you are driving or helping navigate.
There are a few items I recommend you not leave home without. Here are eight of my favorites:
The Perfect Blanket
Regardless of the temperature outside, I relax during the day and sleep better at night with a cozy blanket. This Mosaic weighted blanket keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter and helps soothe your anxiety at the same time. If you aren’t familiar with weighted blankets, refer to this WebMD article. They are an Austin based company which I am happy to support!
Calming Spray
Essential oils can offer great benefits; tailor your aromatherapy to fit your desired mood. Lavender is one of my favorites for relaxation. For focus and energy, peppermint may do the trick. Bergamot is known to reduce anxiety and stress. Spritz a little in the car to relax or on your pillow before you go to bed (make your own spray or purchase a travel set).
Your Favorite Pillow
Along with a spritz of lavender and your favorite pillow, you may have trouble getting a good night’s rest on the road. I have a great solution. Rest Rite Sleep Positioner can help. It’s a handy device that helps you if you have a snorer in the bed, are a pregnant mom or have an injury and need a reminder to reposition yourself in bed. Check out their website.
A Floppy Hat
Find a hat you can crush in your suitcase. The more it gets wet and worn, the better it will feel. Make sure it fits with your favorite pair of sunglasses. Which brings me to …
A Comfortable Pair of Sunglasses
Of course, protecting your eyes from the harsh rays is a must while driving, but finding a pair of sunglasses that you really like, and are comfortable, is the key. I get a headache when I have to wear sunglasses for a long period of time unless they fit me just right. If you are on the water, be sure your eyewear is secure.
Sunscreen
Lather up your arms and hands and reapply throughout the day, as these areas will be exposed to direct sunlight during your journey. And, while you are slathering on the lotion, don’t forget your face and chest. It might be difficult to find a product you like, so purchase travel-size samples and experiment before you get stuck with an entire bottle of something you can’t use. I like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist.
An Extra Set of Car Keys
It would be unfortunate to lose your keys, or accidentally drop them down a canyon, in the middle of your trip! I’m not saying this has happened to me a time or two, but I’m the first one to pack the keys before heading off into the sun.
Phone Mount
My favorite is made by Fitfort, but there are lots of options online. I don’t know what I did before finding this one!
