Flowers and chocolates are lovely, but the best gifts may not come in a box. Memories are priceless. Creating new ones and celebrating tried and true traditions are a great way to make a lasting impression. They will most certainly last longer than any floral bouquet or candy treat.
According to a survey by Eventbrite, experiences are among the most treasured Valentine’s gifts. Experiences are popular because they provide authentic, real-world connections in a society that is increasingly lived out digitally on in front of screens. The survey found that 85% of adults say that experience gifts are an excellent way for both the giver and receiver to enjoy something together.
Another reason to rethink the traditional Valentine’s Day presents is the gifts of “stuff” may not be as appreciated. Many people seem more interested in purging items rather than collecting them; de-cluttering is a popular New Year’s resolution and the topic of many bestsellers. This trend is likely to get stronger; 3 out of 4 millennials would rather spend money on an experience than “things,” and this age group is now one-third of the U.S. population.
Whatever your generation, with a little imagination, you can create a heartfelt, unforgettable holiday for your loved one. This Valentine’s Day, use your imagination and give your loved one a personalized gift.
Here are a few ideas that don’t necessarily cost much, but are guaranteed to add meaning and impact to your celebration.
Tickets to an Event (Big or Small)
A concert by your sweetheart’s favorite band, a comedy show, a theater production you know they would love are all excellent options. It could also be a high school play, a local theater event, or tea at the tea garden down the street from your home. The recipient gets the thrill of opening the gift (you will spell it out in a card) and then anticipate the upcoming event.
Season Passes to a Special Place
If you know your Valentine especially likes the opera (even if you don ‘t), consider a series of tickets to the theater. It could also be a favorite art museum, a state or national park, even a theme park if it holds a special place in their heart. Memory making possibilities are endless. It is also a promise of future fun outings together.
A Handwritten Letter
I know, I know, I say this all the time! But it’s true. In this digital world, love letters might seem like ancient artifacts. But, this is a guaranteed home run. Write down your favorite memories together or the top ten things you love about them. If you buy a beautiful Valentine’s Day card, be sure to write something personal in it instead of just signing your name underneath the pre-printed poem. Underlining part of the poem or sentiment does not count for “handwritten.”
A Special Adventure
The possibilities are endless for a romantic journey. A picnic in a beautiful spot, a hike at a state or national park, a day together spent exploring quaint nearby towns, antiquing or wandering in your local bookstore, or for a culinary adventure, a cooking class or wine tasting class. It all depends on the particular interests of your SO.
A Special Meal
Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days for restaurants, so why not plan a romantic dinner at home? Make all the arrangements to cook their favorite dinner or try something new you know they would love to eat. Make sure the house is tidy, set the table beautifully, their favorite music is playing, and light the candles. Bonus points for a fire in the fireplace.
An Act of Service
Give the gift of helping your loved one with something important. If you know they love a beautiful garden, offer to help with the process of weeding, preparing flower beds, delivering soil, mulching, shopping for plants, etc. If you’ve been meaning to go for a bike ride together, but you know theirs needs repair, get to your local bike shop quickly and fix it up and get it ready to ride. This is not about you – it’s your gift to them. If a Hallmark movie is not on your bucket list, but you know they would love a night in with a bucket of popcorn and the remote, sit tight and remember why you love them.
Photographic Memories
Many online companies can turn your photos into treasured mementos, from mugs to calendars to photo albums, even jigsaw puzzles, and blankets. It’s never been easier to get your favorite photo on canvas, and it looks like you paid a professional a fortune. Gather your favorite photos, upload them, and let your creativity run wild. This gift is especially thoughtful since so often our photos exist only digitally and frequently never make it past the screens of our devices.
Be Kind
You may lament to your friends that Valentine’s Day is just another opportunity to spend cash. Consider it an opportunity, like every other day, to show someone you love them, value them, and care about their day. It never hurts to make someone else feel special.
