No one will deny that we are living in a broken world. While most of the people you know are decent, civil human beings, those who are not are making a significant impact in worsening the very real social divide. Watching the news is both heartbreaking and soul-crushing. So many people are asking, “What can I do?” The answer is different for each individual but the goal is the same…do something.
Here are a few ways to help inspire you to make a difference.
You Will Never Say or Do the Right Thing (for Everyone) – Make Peace With It
But don’t let it stop you from making a sincere effort to offer a tempered, rational, voice. Do so in a humble, compassionate and productive manner. There will always be someone who has a different opinion. Deliver your message with respect and consideration. We are in this world to be united, not divided.
Do It For the Right Reasons
Sadly, some may use a tragic situation to promote their own social media platform. Happily, it’s not the norm. If you are sincerely interested in making a positive change towards fixing this broken world we are living in, put your energy, words, time and resources into it. You can choose your own comfort level – something big or something small. As Maya Angelou said in this 2010 youtube video, “Just Do Right.” She emphasized how you must live your life being the best human being you can be. “If you teach, you have to live your teaching.” If you haven’t watched, take a look.
Three Simple Things You Can Do
Listen, learn and follow through. If you want to make a difference, you will. It’s up to you and the time is now. Commit to do more and be an active part of rewriting history through even one small gesture or commitment.
Use Your Platform
You don’t have to be a superstar to be heard. You have your own personal stage with a group of people who you interact with daily. Use your voice to teach your children, influence your friends and encourage your peers. Let people know what you value through not only your words but your actions. Simple steps of kindness are strong character builders. Small changes make big waves.
It’s simply not okay to look the other way. Reach out in love and support one another. Everyone deserves the same right to breathe.
