As businesses continue to reopen and many people are going back into the office, a reminder of face mask etiquette serves an essential function in helping block the spread of the coronavirus. While a mask does not 100% protect you, it does help to contain your own germs, which limits the overall spread. It’s a far better choice than going mask free.
With the recent surge in cases, mask rules are getting more stringent. It is mandatory to mask up before going into a store or office building but what should you do if you see someone blatantly breaking the rules? Assume nothing. You have no idea why this person is not wearing a mask and it may be a situation where this person has severe asthma or health conditions, which prohibits them from covering their nose and mouth for an extended period of time.
Running
Be considerate of fellow runners, walkers and people pushing baby strollers. Few people enjoy running with a mask, and it’s difficult to take in deep breaths, but when you are in closer proximity than 6 feet, be extra cautious and wear a mask. As an alternative, pick a time of day to run when there are fewer people out and you can enjoy the fresh air in solitude. A recent sports medicine article talks about selecting the proper face mask when exercising and balancing the benefits versus the risks when it comes to outdoor exercise.
Beaches and Public Outings
Don’t drop your guard when you are out enjoying the waves. The guidelines still apply. These suggestions apply to all outdoor gatherings and should be taken seriously. If you are alone on the beach, a mask isn’t necessary. When you are near a large group of people, a mask is a good choice. When you go to the restroom, concession stand, boardwalk or hotel gift shop, walking through the hotel, anywhere there are other people, wear a mask. Keep it on hand even if it’s early in the day and you don’t anticipate anyone else around.
The Office
A face covering is not a substitute for good old fashion hygiene and social distance. A face mask is intended to add another layer of protection but it is most effective when participates. Wearing a mask not only serves as a precaution but also sends the message that you are aware of the risk and showing respect for your office workers. You should wear a mask when walking the halls, getting water, taking the elevator, going to the restroom and getting to and from your vehicle.
How to Properly Wear a Face Covering
According to the CDC you should handle the mask only by the ear loops and fold the outside corners together when not in use. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth when removing your mask and wash your hands or sanitize before putting on your mask. Your mask should be secured over both your nose and mouth—do not wear it around your neck, forehead or looped around only one ear.
