Mother’s Day Gift Ideas 2021 and Celebration Etiquette

19 Apr 2021 By: Diane Gottsman

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9th and many families are looking forward to spending time with their moms, grandmas, stepmoms and those who feel like mom. How can you determine if it’s practical to have a celebration to honor your mom this Mother’s Day? According to Dr. Sten H. Vermund, Dean of Yale School of Public Health, via Martha Stewart.com, “the only safe gathering is the one where everyone has been vaccinated.” Unless your entire guest list has received the vaccine, safety precautions must still be observed. An outdoor celebration is the best option when you plan to mix families from different pods. Especially if you are mixing with some who have not yet received the shot or families with small children. How can you celebrate your mom in a manner fit for a queen? She probably has everything she needs but it’s nice to receive a gift or thoughtful gesture. Here are a few Mother’s Day Gift Ideas (2021) to brighten up her day.

A Cheery Front Door

The road to Mom’s house may be short or long but when you get there, it’s always “home”. Decorate her front porch with a beautiful pot of flowers that she can change out from season to season. Bring a fresh wreath for her door and a new welcome mat. Keep in mind her personal taste and preferences and don’t forget to save the receipt just in case she wants to swap something out.

A Manicured Lawn

Candles and perfume are nice but a beautiful lawn tells the neighbors you love your mom. As you ponder heartfelt Mother’s Day Gift Ideas for 2021, consider giving your mom the gift of service by helping her upkeep her front yard. Mow the lawn, blow the leaves off her patio and front porch, lay down mulch or fertilizer, pull the weeds and trim the shrubs. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated. Add a gift bag with a new lawn hose, some garden sheers and a pretty pair of gardening gloves.

Some Quality Time

Whether you visit your mom remote this year or can sit on the couch next to her in her living room, make sure to give her your full attention. Share a meal together virtually or in person, surprise her with her favorite dessert (you may need to have it shipped), watch a movie and put away your cell phone for a couple of hours. If you have children, set up sleeping bags on the floor to watch the movie together and get them involved by helping pop the popcorn, hand out individual snack bags you brought from home, and settle in for some quality time together with mom or grandma.

If you can’t be together in person, you can still watch a movie together through a Netflix account and Chrome installed on her laptop or desktop. You can even group chat!

Update Her Photo Library

Does anyone own a photo album anymore? Another possible Mother’ Day Gift Idea (2021) is to gift mom a lovely album for her coffee table. Or, you can upload pictures to a special digital picture frame you can update from your own device so she doesn’t have to do a thing but enjoy the pictures of her family. It’s up to you to keep the photos updated and all she has to do is smile every time she sees your face. You can teach her how to use it on her end if she has any questions. Personally, reading the directions is not as easy as having someone walk me through the steps (my sweet son!) face to face.
