Whether you have planned your holiday party for months, or have decided at the last minute to invite a few friends over and celebrate together, paying attention to a handful of special details will make your party sparkle. If, as a guest, you have already RSVP’d, don’t forget to uphold your commitment because the host is depending on you as an important part of their festivities. Keep reading for some simple and festive tips for throwing a last-minute holiday party.
Ice Buckets Galore
Nothing ruins a party faster than running out of cocktails or drinking a warm cocktail that should be served over ice. Make sure to have several ice buckets with plenty of ice in reserve. One of my favorite party hacks is to create a decorative ice display out of a block of ice. Fill a large gallon plastic container with water and add cranberries, mint or rosemary. Place an empty wine or champagne bottle in the center so the mold will freeze around it. Run a small amount of warm water around the mold to take the empty bottle out and then replace it with a full bottle into the center of the mold. It’s easy and such a great conversation piece.
Get Ready to Pour
Have all of your wine and champagne glasses ready in advance. Take them out of the cabinet a couple of days early and do a quick inspection to make sure they are not chipped or have collected dust. It’s amazing how glassware sitting in a cabinet for an extended period of time can get broken without any explanation.
Wine Temperature Matters
According to winemag.com, sparkling wines benefit from chilling between 41 to 45°F, which helps preserve the effervescence. Refrigerate up to two hours before serving. Light dry white wines should be served between 45 and 49°F, to maintain its acidity and freshness. Rosés are best served slightly warmer than whites, between 48 to 53°F, because of their fruit flavors and mild tannins. Full body whites should be served between 50 and 55°F, which enhances their aromatic characteristics. White to medium reds should be served between 54 and 60°F, and full-bodied red wine should be served between 60 and 65°F.
If you’re throwing a last-minute party and running short on time, you may want to ask a few friends to contribute to your wine or cocktail collection, or bring an appetizer or main dish that would complement the signature libations.
Don’t Forget About the Holiday Theme
Everyone enjoys holiday themed cocktail napkins and colorful decorations to enhance their party experience. Setting the tone by offering interesting details makes the party more memorable. Finger towels in the bathroom, a simple but festive centerpiece in the middle of the table and merry holiday music in the background keeps the party rolling along.
