Watching the news often leaves us feeling helpless while observing the aftermath of a natural disaster as entire communities face devastation, and families struggle to build back their lives. What can we do close to home, and afar, to help communities rebuild after a flood, hurricane, tornado, or other natural disaster? Here are a few suggestions:
The Basics Are Crucial
From monetary donations to a disaster relief organization to hands-on help as a volunteer, every effort is appreciated more than you can imagine. The American Red Cross, along with local nonprofits are always in need of help, supplies, and manpower. A few trusted organizations in the region include American Red Cross – North Carolina, Salvation Army of the Carolinas, and Samaritan’s Purse. Always do your research before inputting your bank or credit card information.
Donate Blood
One of the most important needs in the community, always, is the donation of blood. Hospitals are always in need and the demand is even greater after a disaster. Find a local blood drive through the American Red Cross and see if you qualify. Even if your community is not directly in the aftermath of a storm, donating blood saves lives and is a blessing to those who are dealing with a chronic illness, disease, or medical complication.
Don’t Forget the Pets
No creature is immune to the stress of a natural disaster, including pets and wildlife in the areas of impact. When a family loses their home, their pet also loses their home. If you have a special place in your heart for our beloved companions, there is surely a trusted resource such as The Humane Society aiding in emergency relief efforts as well.
Join Forces with a Fundraiser or Consider Hosting
Perhaps you are the friend in your circle who is first to raise their hand to host a social event or volunteer with a local nonprofit. Now may be the time to reach out to your contacts and coordinate a social event where the proceeds benefit a nonprofit connected to the cause. If you don’t have the space to host, you may also be able to help collect silent auction items for the organizer.
Keep Relief Efforts on Your Radar
Often seasonal events, such as a fall concert or holiday market, designate a portion of their profits to a particular cause. As you review your calendar and make plans with friends and family, look out for those groups that have chosen to send funds to Hurricane Helene relief. You’ll get to spend time together making memories while also helping those who are less fortunate.
