Can I Wear White After Labor Day? An Etiquette Perspective

Can I wear white after Labor Day? | The model is a young beautiful girl in a white sweater in a cozy interior in warm colors

At one time, for both fashion and comfort, it was considered unwise to wear white after Labor Day, as it was associated with vacation and resort wear, worn to stay cool in the summer heat. In the late 1800s, white was also an indicator of wealth, as only a few could afford to take a summer vacation. Those days are gone!

Much like fashion, etiquette evolves, and embracing a more modern take on clothing is practical and fashionable. Designers make white clothing in winter weight material, meant to wear through the fall and colder months of the year. There are a few things to consider when deciding if you are going to continue wearing those white jeans. I am wearing mine.

Skip the Linen

This is the season to pull out your warmer tones that are cotton, cashmere, velvet, and flannel. For those living in Texas and hotter climates, stick with breathable fabric and save the heavier weight for lower temps.

Switch Out Your Tops

Instead of tanks and lightweight tees, add shirts and blouses that “feel” warmer, even if they still are perfect for high temps. Put away your summer clothes and reach for clothes that complement the current season. White pairs beautifully with camel, burgundy, deep green, and navy.

Accent with the Color

A great pair of seasonal white boots, or a white or ivory leather jacket, will add some flair to your seasonal wardrobe.

Use Texture to Add Interest

Adding a tweed jacket, wearing a pair of ivory corduroy jeans, or a white wool skirt, paired with a complementary blouse, will update your look for the season.

Closet Staples All Year Long

You can wear a white cotton shirt or a tee all year long. Pair it with jeans, or wear it under a jacket or sweater. Make sure to occasionally purchase new, fresh white tees if they start to get yellow or appear stained.

Consider the Event

A white, strappy sundress may be perfect for an outdoor occasion in summer, but the same dress will be out of place in the winter months, either indoors or outdoors.

White as an Accent

Consider white your accent color. Whether you are wearing a sweater, slacks, jeans, purse, or jacket, accessorize with other seasonally appropriate choices to make your outfit work for you.
