Perfect Holiday Guest Etiquette

With the holidays in full swing, there is no better reason, or season, to spend time with friends and family. From casual gatherings to formal dinner parties, there is a particular protocol for gracious guests. Take the quiz below to test your knowledge and refine your party etiquette skills. 1. RSVP – ASAP. You only have:

a. One day to respond.
b. Two weeks to respond.
c. 48 hours to respond.

Answer: C. Don’t wait to see who else will be attending. Respond within 48 hours with your answer – a yes or no. Don’t say “Maybe.”

2. The definition of “Black Tie” is:

a. Short sequin party dress.
b. Long evening gown.
c. Anything goes.

Answer: B. A formal “Black Tie” affair calls for a long dress.

3. “Fashionably late” means:

a. Arriving no later than 10 minutes of the set time.
b. Within the half hour.
c. After all the guests have arrived.

Answer: A. Never early!

4. You replied “yes” and now you have gotten a better offer. You:

a. Call and make an excuse.
b. Text that your plans have changed.
c. Decline the better offer and stick to your original plan.

Answer: C. It’s the right thing to do.

5. You get to the party and realize you are underdressed. You:

a. Go home and change.
b. Go to a movie instead.
c. Stay, enjoy the festivities and make no excuse.

Answer: C. Make the best of the situation and stop apologizing.

6. Your babysitter cancels at the last minute and you are ready to go. You:

a. Call the host and ask if you can bring the twins along.
b. Text the host, apologize and let them know you have had an unexpected change of plans.
c. Bring the twins – the host will never notice.

Answer: B. Your host will see your text before she listens to her messages.

7. You see someone double dipping in the shrimp dip. You decide to:

a. Ask them to please use a cracker next time.
b. Mention it to the host.
c. Say nothing and go for the salsa instead.

Answer: B. Let the host make the final decision on what should be done.

8. The soap dispenser in the bathroom is conspicuously empty. You:

a. Dig through the cabinets to find a refill.
b. Wet your hands with water and call it a day.
c. Tell your host that germs are a spread’n like Christmas cheer.

Answer: C. Your host will appreciate the heads up.

9. Cousin Ed has had a few too many spiked eggnogs. He asks you to drive him home, but it’s on the other side of town. You:

a. Point him in the direction of the nearest bus stop and hand him some change.
b. Call Uber and bill the host.
c. Ask the host to take care of the issue.

Answer: C. Allow the host the opportunity to handle the situation with discretion.

10. You wanted seconds of the holiday gumbo but got distracted taking care of Cousin Ed. You:

a. Compliment your hosts cooking and ask for a doggie bag.
b. Make your own the next day.
c. Quietly sneak some out without anyone noticing and vow to return the container another day.

Answer: B. Get your pot out and start the fire.
