Think Before You Text: Five Messages Never to Send by Text

30 Aug 2012 By: Diane Gottsman

While I’m the first to admit I appreciate getting messages via text rather than having to check my email while I’m running around during the day, there are just some things that should never be communicated by a text message. I recently breached one of my own rules…read on to find out which one.

5 Messages Never to Send By Text

1. A marriage proposal – “Hey, maybe we should tie the knot after our Saturday morning cooking class” just doesn’t hold the same weight as a well thought out marriage proposal. Call me old fashioned but I stand my ground on this one.

2. A nasty comment – After a heated argument you may have the immediate urge to text a short and sweet “You can go straight to H-E-double-L” on your smart phone. Resist the temptation at all costs! An argument can easily turn into a text war, and you will most likely regret your decision in a few hours.

3. A break up – Only a coward does his or her dirty work behind the screen of a cell phone. It’s very bad etiquette to drop something this serious on someone else without any regard for the other person’s feelings.

4. A serious medical diagnosis or a death – Okay – bingo. I am guilty right here. I recently had a death in my family and after multiple attempts at trying to reach someone by telephone and even email, I finally sent a text to let her know that a family member had passed away. I have to say that under extreme circumstances, when there is no other option; you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. But I still call this tip a “don’t”!

5. Anything naked – You are asking for big problems if you send pictures of your (or anyone else’s) body parts that shouldn’t be flashed up on a screen in the executive boardroom. Don’t do it! My girlfriend recently sent me a picture of herself in her bathroom, trying on clothes for a trip we were planning. She was in front of a mirror and her clothed (but still not appropriate) back end was showing while she held up multiple pieces of clothing for me to look at. For the guys who are reading this, girls do this when they are traveling together to decide what they should take on their trip. While I had a good laugh at her expense, what if it had gotten into the wrong hands? I deleted it immediately but I can’t guarantee that some of our mutual friends would have done the same without a little funny banter first.

Texting is a great way to communicate but be careful how you use it.
