Do you stick New Year’s goals you want to achieve in the coming year? Are you feeling excited and eager to start knocking them out? Along with a little overwhelmed with thinking about where or how to start? I am sharing some valuable tips by professional organizer, Melissa Rogers, founder of Modified by Melissa, on how to stick your New Year’s goals.
As with anything new, it’s crucial to have a clear plan with achievable steps set in place to have the chance for the highest level of success.
So let’s talk about some ways to organize your New Year’s goals for the new year to put yourself at ease and to feel confident about reaching those goals within the next year.
Jot It Down
The first step is to brain dump all of the things you have in mind that you’d like to learn, try, and implement this coming year. Nothing is too big or too small to include. Put it all onto a sheet of paper or Google Doc to get started. The recipe for success is to get it out of your head and onto paper.
Consider A Timeframe And Stick To It
Look at those items and sort them into short term and long term categories. For example, implementing a new morning routine could be something done within a shorter time. Creating, developing, and releasing a new training program within your company would generally be a longer-term goal. Once you know which are short term and which are long term, you can start to map those goals out by month or quarter.
Make It Manageable
Whatever the goal, break it down further into bite-sized pieces.
For example, if you desire to create a morning routine to implement this year,
- Write down what you want the end goal to look like.
- Work backward to determine each step required to reach your goal.
- Take small, actionable steps to achieve weekly goals.
- Schedule the tasks as if they are appointments and stick to them.
- Do a bi-weekly or monthly check- in to reassess progress and ensure you’re still on track.
- Recruit a Trusted Friend or Colleague
You might also seek out an accountability partner that has their own or similar goals. Schedule regular check-ins or work sessions to keep progress moving forward.
Before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to knocking out your New Year’s goals for 2020!
