Some say chivalry is dead, but don’t believe the hype. Here’s a pro tip for the gentlemen reading this post, just in time for Valentine’s Day: some thoughtful gestures never go out of style.
Although chivalry sometimes gets mired in confusion and controversy, it is essentially the courteous behavior that men show women. The concept is alive and well, but it has evolved over time. While today it’s best to swap politeness for chivalry in professional settings, special treatment is both welcomed and encouraged by many women in their personal lives. Certain actions, both big and small, have the power to strengthen your relationship and show your sweetheart how much you care.
Here are 10 thoughtful gestures to dazzle your special someone on Valentine’s Day (and every other day).
Make a Plan
Many people suffer from decision fatigue. It’s the inevitable result of navigating dozens of big and small choices every day relating to work, kids, family, household matters, health, pets and all the other things that women typically juggle. It can make planning a special night out feel like just one more thing on her lengthy to-do list. So take the initiative and plan something you think she would love, then make the reservation and book the babysitter.
Come To the Door
If you’re picking up your love for a date, get out of the car and walk to the door to meet her. Don’t just text that you’re there, and definitely do not sit at the curb and honk.
Pretend You’re a Valet
Open the passenger door for her, then shut it when she’s inside the vehicle. It’s a small but thoughtful gesture that will be noticed and appreciated. She can be your Valentine or simply a female friend or family member, it’s still a thoughtful habit to practice. This is a social rule and does not apply to business scenarios.
Be a Stand-up Guy
Let her sit first before taking your seat, and stand when your date rises to leave the table. Also, remember to hold open doors so she can enter before you.
Mind Your Manners
Brush up on your dining etiquette. In our increasingly casual world, it’s easy to let even basic decorum slide, but showing her your best behavior when you’re enjoying a special dinner together (or anytime, really) will make a big impression.
Offer Her a Bite or a Sip
It may make you crazy when she doesn’t order her own dessert, then wants some of yours. Wow her by proactively inviting her to try whatever tasty item you ordered that you think she would like (or ask her to pick something to share).
Lend a Hand
Tackle a chore your sweetheart hates. Whether it’s doing the dishes or getting the tires on her car rotated, show you care by handling a task that she avoids.
Let Her Know You’re Thinking of Her
Send a message for no reason, just to say hello or share something that made her come to mind. Even sweeter, put your thoughts in writing in the form of a letter or heartfelt card. She’ll cherish your words long after the flowers lose their color or she’s enjoyed the last bite of chocolate.
Lead the Way
If you are in a crowd at a concert, a sporting event, or just a busy street, hold her hand behind your back as you lead the way through the throng.
Take Pride in What You Wear
It’s easy to dress for comfort rather than style, especially in a long-term relationship, but a little effort goes a long way. Set the sweats aside and put on a nice outfit for your next date. Bonus points for stepping up your style game on a daily basis, not just on special occasions. Improving how you present yourself can make a difference in every area of life, including your relationship.
Courtesy and acts of kindness are timeless and appreciated by men and women alike. But showing a little extra thoughtfulness to the woman in your life will make her feel treasured – and turn you into her knight in shining armor.
