Halloween Party Office Etiquette: The Good, The Bad and The Scary

You’ve put in the time and effort to establish a strong professional reputation. It would be a Halloween tragedy to see it go to waste over a silly costume or party slip-up. What is the best way to celebrate spooky season free from any awkward exchanges? Sharing some etiquette tips on today’s blog.

Halloween Party Office Etiquette: The Good, The Bad and The Scary

Make Sure You Are Not the Only One

Ask around to see if everyone is going to be wearing their costumes in the office, or changing before the afternoon party. If you are wearing it during the workday, select a costume that allows you to handle office duties and go to the restroom throughout the day. You have to be able to walk comfortably, use your computer, and answer calls.

Consider a Team Theme

Indeed.com recommends going for a costume theme to build camaraderie among your teammates. You may want to go as your favorite characters on a sitcom, movie, or sports team. Or, perhaps a favorite emoji from your phone.

Plan a Decorating or Costume Contest

Who doesn’t love a good game? Involve more of your coworkers in the fun by having some type of contest where there is a winner of a small prize. From the most decked out desk to the most creative costume or decorated pumpkin, a contest brings out a creative spirit in all of us.

Keep It Classy

There are hundreds of costume options to select from and finding a costume that is G rated is the ultimate goal. Too tight, too short, too low, or too “anything” is definitely off limits at an office event.

Remember Your Audience

You are encouraged to have a great time but don’t forget you are still at work, even if it’s an after hours celebration. Letting your hair down, or your synthetic costume wig, can be a potion for trouble. An open bar does not mean “all you can drink” and is not an invitation to make foolish choices. You are still on company time at an office function. Even if you see your boss “throwing back” a little too much witches brew, you maintain your own reputation.

‘Tis the Season to Avoid Political Controversy

The election is right around the corner but now is not the time to start a battle by wearing, or mocking, your least favorite politician. Everyone has a right to their own opinions and a derogatory Halloween costume of any kind is not the professional stand you want to take for your career. Your politics should be kept out of the celebration, especially if there is liquor involved and emotions can get out of hand.

Skip the Ghoulish Garb and Bloody Makeup

While scary décor might be your favorite way to decorate, an office party is not the proper venue to wear your preference. Avoid anything that has a weapon or object of destruction attached to it. It’s also important to be respectful of those who may be going through a difficult time due to a tragedy or loss.

Respect Cultural Differences

If someone says they don’t want to participate, don’t ask questions. Be mindful and respectful of other people’s customs and cultural views and allow them to participate at their own level of comfort.
