Business Etiquette: Five Simple Ways to Invest in Yourself

Creating a capsule wardrobe saves time in the office

Regardless of what stage you are at in your career, making personal development a priority has the power to help propel you forward. Not only that, keeping sight of your goals and well being sets the tone for business success and creative fulfillment.  Here are my business etiquette tips on Five Ways to Invest in Yourself:

  1. Maintain a budget. You’ve heard it said, “Pay yourself first.” This commonly shared financial advice is always relevant. Whether it’s building up your emergency savings, paying down credit card debt, making an additional contribution to an IRA or other account, the peace of mind this effort provides is well worth the sacrifice.
  2. Create a capsule wardrobe. [Tweet “Curate a collection of business-ready separates that mix and match well together.”] Look no further than Pinterest for plenty of inspiration on getting started with your own closet (or browse my boards for Women’s Office Wear and A Girl’s Casual Closet). You’ll reap financial savings and find more time in the day.
  3. Consider an upgrade. In a typical day, are there irritations that can be avoided, if only you’d invest a little extra time and money? It could be something as inexpensive as making a second set of those often misplaced keys, upgrading your bedding, incorporating a few luxury bath and beauty products, or replacing your styling tools.  You’ll enjoy more ease in your morning right away.
  4. Attend a summit. Networking is taken to another level when genuine relationships are formed with connections from all around the country. Research a few conferences in your field or make time to develop a personal interest at a weekend workshop.
  5. Replace your work bag and/or luggage. If your carry-on has seen better days and you travel often for business, research a few options that will wear well and make packing easier.  Travel + Leisure shares their favorites here.
